Junk & Stuff
There is nothing Xnewsian on this page. Click away now, if you dare. In the fine tradition of people creating their own webpages, I must include links to stuff I think is nifty or interesting. I will not descend into the realm of posting vacation pictures (well, probably not), and I hope some of you will find the links interesting, but the real purpose of this page is to fill a much-needed void. And it needs more cowbell.
Music
I like most kinds of music, and I happily live a town where there's a variety of good music to go hear, most nights. I could fill pages with miscellaneous music links; instead, I will fill only this little section of my site with them.
The Complete R.E.M. Lyrics Archive
This was one of my first contacts with the internet's power to facilitate collaboration, and I am still a bit in awe of it. To appreciate the difficulty of reaching concensus on the lyrics, perhaps one had to have spent a lot of time in the 1980s listening to Mr. Stipe sing. The e-mail lists which gave rise to the archive have given way to rec.music.rem. Oh, yeah, there's also a helpful R.E.M. lyrics annotation faq.
John Mooney
Hate the website, love the artist. Anyone interested in blues or funk or guitars should make it a mission to catch a John Mooney show. This review gives a good idea about his music and indulges in the most egregious purple prose to boot. If I had to recommend only one album, I'd tell you to rush to buy Dealing With The Devil.
Flash
I like flash, and I can waste a lot of time viewing it. You should also waste some time with it, so here's some of my favorite flash.
Extreme Engineering
A mag-lev train theoretically could take you from New York to London in fifty-four minutes. You'd have to go 3,100 miles at 5,000 miles per hour through a tunnel floating in the Atlantic Ocean. The interactive flash presentations at the Discovery Channel site explain how engineers think the tunnel and other wacky projects should work.
the everyday happenings of weebl and sometimes weebls friend bob
Hands-down, my favorite series of flash animations. As with Homestar, you either love weebl or never want to see him again. You should start at the start, of course; just block off half a day to immerse yourself. If you can't or won't do that, you should at least watch one of my favorite installments, art.
badger badger badger
Another animation of weebl's. f11 for fullscreen, crank volume, let play all day.
Too Stupid to be President
Fifty or so flash send-ups of the current U.S. administration. I like the Pooh Bear one and the Maxwell Smart one.
Singing Horses
Horses from the Konungariket Sverige. Click them, then click them again.
Humor
I don't actually spend much time looking at humor sites, but they can be good time-wasters when I'm busy procrastinating.
BBspot
I visit this site almost every day, but not for the humor; the daily links section in the upper left corner usually has something funny or interesting. Plus, BBspot has a W countdown.
Uncyclopedia
Started in January of 2005, this site is quickly becoming the web's best source of information.
